Great episode! On Superman’s first flight… it’s a matter of interpretation but some credit the radio show (The Adventures of Superman) with flight because of the ’39 pilot episodes (quick digression: radio pilots were called “auditions” and TAoS had four-episode audition as a pilot- a two part Origin and two parter The Shark regarding naval espionage).

At the end of the first part of The Shark, Superman is described as flying. At the start of the second part, he’s traveling at the speed of light, but also described as moving in leaps in bounds, but also explains to his passenger (he’s carrying someone under his arm) to not be afraid because he’ll slow his descent (defying gravity and arguably flying).

Later episodes of the radio show would do similar things which are inexplicable without flight (like hovering) which pre-date the Fleischer cartoon… but if the standard is physics-defying aerial feats, the comics already had that. Arguably if you animated what was happening between frames there’s no other way to describe it but flight.

So it’s not totally clear cut what the first ambiguous flight was, but the cartoon is probably the first unambiguous flight. Unraveling all that isn’t straight forwards so most stick with the clearer narrative of Fleischer starting it, but let’s just say no one argued with the cartoon because it felt like it was something already in the air.

(Been busy with NYCC prep, but I will definitely have a quick 100 Episode congrats in before the deadline… hopefully tonight, before NYCC)

  2. At some point, I’d like to go back through the radio show in more depth so thanks for this information!

Hope you had a great time at NYCC and thanks for your message!
