Back when I thought that Winn was destined to eventually become to the Toyman, I predicted that perhaps his character would turn to a criminal life because of his rejection by Kara. But that was before it was revealed that his father was the actual Toyman. Watching this episode, I just didn’t get any real “nice guy” vibes off the character. Just because someone has an unrequited crush, it doesn’t mean they’ve got nice guy syndrome.
I also take issue with the description of Cat as a well-meaning mentor figure. Maybe she’ll become more of a mentor for Kara in the future, but for now, she’s just kind of a mean, horrible boss who seems more than willing to fire Kara if she so much as looks at her funny. I will say, though, that my favorite line of the episode might have been the one about not needing her therapist if she’s not having lunch with her mother.
I kind of cringed at how hard they were hammering home the girl power message- not that I disagree with it, but because it felt kind of forced at times. That diner waitress saying how great to have a female hero her daughter could look up to might just as well have turned to the camera and announced, “And you can watch her on CBS, Monday nights at 8 (7 central).” Besides, I knew it was one of those things that haters would jump all over. Alex’s “because she’s just a girl?” retort didn’t make a lot of sense to me because Henshaw hadn’t even said anything about Kara being a girl. My impression was that his gripe with Kara didn’t have much, if anything, to do with her gender, but was rather due to the fact that she was an alien and had failed to prove herself in his eyes. Anyway, I hope they got all that stuff out of their system and won’t be hitting the audience over the head with it so much moving forward.
Overall, I thought the pilot was great. It took several episodes for me to warm up to The Flash, but Supergirl won me over much more quickly.

That’s very true. It’s all in how they handle possible rejection.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens in their relationship.
