V wrote in to share some thoughts about the Supergirl Season 6 episode titled “A Few Good Women”!
Hey, Super Friends!
These are my thoughts as I was watching the episode:
➢Okay so the Phantom Zone is full of Dementors? Cool cool cool.
➢I appreciated a gay male character for once. We get so few of these in TV that aren’t just comedic side characters.
➢Andrea trying to run CatCo with absolutely no journalism experience or expertise is…uncomfortable. Although, I am enjoying Julie Gonzalo staying on for Season 6. I fully expected her to float off into the Yurt with Maxwell Lord, Morgan Edge, and Cat Grant. The constant mentions of Cat are making me think she is going to return at some point this season and I am HERE for that!
➢Is Lillian Luthor going to end up being MVP this season? I would love her to do a full 180 and end up being good. And happy. With Lena. That’s the successful relationship I’m really waiting for.
➢When Zor-El was revealed, I was a little underwhelmed. Not sure what I expected or what they’re going for exactly, but I just wanted him to be more commanding or something. More memorable. Sorry, Max from Roswell.
➢Lena absolutely tearing down Andrea is something I didn’t know I needed. I loved to see it.
➢Alex stocking up on Potstickers for Kara’s return is straight out of fanfiction but I appreciated that nod.
➢Alex telling Kelly about Kara offscreen was…a decision. I’ve seen a lot of flack for that on twitter, but I guess we’ve seen a dozen Supergirl reveals by now so, did we really need one more? Perhaps they were better off not showing us a substandard reveal taking up valuable final season time.
➢I like how they got around COVID-19 for filming Lex’s trial. Inventive but also, we been knew.
➢I can’t wait for the Supergirl Radio Legal Consultants to destroy the portrayal of that trial. I mean, I know it was for plot, but still. I find it bizarre that sometimes the writers put a lot of thought and research into certain parts of the show, and sometimes they can barely write a cohesive sentence. It’s like when you’re in school and you have five minutes left to write a 500-word essay at the end of a test, so you just throw words at the paper…
➢Lillian coming to Lena? Honestly, this is my favourite story; the Lillian/Lena relationship. I’ve been waiting since Season 2 for this.
➢Lena and Lex. We’ve been hearing since the beginning that Lena is the better strategist. I’m waiting for the payoff of all that set-up. I did enjoy the siblings fighting, though. Lena is maybe the only person that can get under Lex’s skin and I’m really going to enjoy more of that this season. If we absolutely must have Lex in the show, then I just want all his scenes to be with other Luthors. They’re the best. Maybe we just need a Luthor spin-off? Forget Superman & Lois, The Luthors™️ is what we all need!
➢Oh my God, the Midvale High School text drop during Dreamer’s training? I literally laughed out loud at that exposition because it was so ridiculous. Not just the text, but then Brainy literally saying “Kara and Alex in High School” just in case we didn’t quite get it from that giant red glowing text.
➢I need to talk about Dreamer. When fighting, I sometimes feel physically afflicted by how painful the Dream-based punning is. Isn’t she supposed to be a writer? That being said, the way Dreamer talks is very reminiscent of how comics are written, so I guess it could be considered in-character (I’m assuming, since we won’t get Dreamer in comics ‘til the summer).
Outside of being Dreamer, Nia is a totally different side to that character. The Nia of CatCo only barely resembles Dreamer. This reminds me of Kara vs. Supergirl. Even her stances are different. It’s subtle and rarely referred to in the show, but I really appreciate how much work Nicole Maines puts into this character. Not to mention she’s probably the most down to earth character we have on the show and I think a lot of people can relate to her – I’m speaking far more broadly than her being trans, too.
I kind of appreciate that the show put Brainiac 5 and Nia together rather than the relationship between Brainiac 5 and Kara that we see in some of the comics. I just don’t see romantic chemistry between those two characters in this show and unlike so many of the show’s previous romantic pairings, they decided to go in a different and more appropriate direction on this occasion.
Speaking of Kara, they either have to make Supercorp endgame (seems unlikely) or have her end the show outside of a relationship or any romantic prospects – Buffy style.
She does not have any sort of development with William and they have one season to develop any new romances AND finish the show, which is a tall order in my opinion.
However, I must remember this is the Supergirl writer’s room…my expectations are low. This isn’t Legends of Tomorrow after all.
➢Silas, proving you CAN fix a tablet just by smacking it repeatedly. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate that Silas is basically a vampire…and the modernised Carmilla web series based on the novella Carmilla from 1872, is about vampire-infested Silas University in Styria, Austria. I love that show, so this was either a very nice nod or a crazy coincidence! Either way, I was super excited with that.
➢I hope Kara isn’t stranded in the Phantom Zone for too long – I really like seeing her interactions with the other main cast. Melissa + literally any cast member > any other pairing on the show…except for the Luthors. They’re golden.
Catch you guys next week!
