Danae wrote an email to share some thoughts on the Supergirl season four episode titled “Suspicious Minds”!
Hey, Super Ladies!I am not quite sure how I feel about this episode. First of all, the mind wipe is very interesting, but I fear they’re gonna write themselves into a corner. Alex’s life has always been about Kara for a large part, so not knowing she is supergirl will leave entire holes in her memory, right? Or are those memories adapted? Anyway, I’m ready for the ultimate angst and some stellar Melissa and Chyler acting! But, I’m more conflicted about what they’re doing with Colonel Haley. It seems odd to me that they’re writing a woman of color so xenophobic and about attacking aliens. When the “resident was firing Supergirl, I figured she went along with it because he is her superior. I hoped we could get a storyline about how she has to go along with these events because it was difficult for her, as a woman, to obtain this position, probably even more so as a woman of color. But, instead of just following the President’s orders, she goes a step further by starting a witch hunt on Supergirl? Not that I think people of color can’t ever be xenophobic, but since she currently the only woman of color (aside from an unnamed DEO agent), it seems odd to me. And I’m a white woman, so I might be speaking out of turn here, but watching the episode, this continuously rubbed me the wrong way. I hope we can get a background story for Haley, so that we can find out why she responds to aliens this way. I know you’re not always a fan of the topical situations, but I still wanted to share my thoughts on this since it was such a big part of this episode. But thankfully, there were still things I loved about this episode like the interactions between Brainy and Nia. Or when Kara and Lena went to a gym and Kara had to pretend she was getting tired. And I do believe that together with Russian Kara, this was the beginning to an interesting second half to this season.– Danae
I like your thoughts on this. I too thought she just went along with the President because he is her superior. Then the writers wrote her like this. Where did all this anger come from?
