Listener Email: The Road To Hell

Daryl wrote in with some thoughts on the Supergirl season five episode titled “Stranger Beside Me”!

This show is taking Lena on a journey that is painful to see. “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions” is exactly what they are doing with her from what I can see. A commenter on SpoilerTV compared Lena to the unnamed villain scientist who was experimenting on Livewire in the season two episode “We Can Be Heroes” and I couldn’t even say they were wrong. Even I, who has been an ardent Lena defender since day one, can see where the writers are going and they’re making her misdeeds just stack up. It’s been said that this season is a fight for Lena’s soul and I am really wondering who is going to win and if can Lena also avoid jail time.

I have to give the writers credit for some of Alex’s dialogue in this episode. The fact that they are self aware enough to have Alex question why, even though she barely knows Kelly, she is still so heavily invested in the relationship already is astonishing. We have seen this kind of behavior from Alex before with Maggie when Alex realized she didn’t know as much about Maggie as she thought. For example, when Maggie cheated on her ex or that her coming out story was more dramatic than she had revealed to Alex.

A SpoilerTV commenter made a great observation: Andrea says that they’ll be using tablets to do their work at CatCo, but when we see Kara and William working at those computers, the tablets are nowhere to be found. One problem with Kara is that she has always treated her job at CatCo as if it’s a great inconvenience when she seems to forget it’s the only thing that allows her to live a life as Kara Danvers. Now, she has a boss that will actually expect her to show up to meetings on time and do assignments, which we have rarely seen aside from the few episodes with Snapper Carr and the one episode where Lena had to pull the boss card on her. Seeing Kara care about her journalism job for more than one episode in a row is going to take some getting used to.

Exactly how much does Kelly know? A SpoilerTV commenter said that Kelly even knows Kara is supergirl, but I definitely don’t remember that happening. It’s more likely they made some vague reference and they expect us to connect the dots ourselves so they don’t have to trouble themselves about writing yet another “reveal” scene. I still can’t believe that Kara is still under the impression that Lena has just forgiven her now. Kara’s blindness to the fact that Lena might still be upset shows how little she knows her. The show is harkening back to season two where they kept Lena isolated from the majority of the cast and she needs, now more than ever, to be around people and not in her lab all the time.

On to Brainy and Nia: Seeing a couple on The CW communicate is so darn refreshing, but Nia needs to continue keeping the lines of communication open. If Brainy is going overboard again, she needs to say something.
