Listener Email: The Quest for Peace, or, A Summer Without Topical Superhero Shows

Mark sent us an email of thoughts (and a clever song parody) about the Supergirl season four finale titled “The Quest for Peace”!

And now, the end is near
We’ve finished up
another season.
My friends, I’ll say it clear,
That stupid mind-
Wipe had no reason…

I was tempted to write this entire letter as that song parody, but I don’t have time to get it all together, so you’re off the hook!

I enjoyed this episode a lot. The Luthors taking over the Oval Office, each with the ability and apparent desire to kill the others, was like seeing modern-day Borgias lounging around drinking all the best wine (except for the poisoned glasses). Red Daughter found her redemption and Kara worked in a revenge-blast against Lex for her.  Ben Lockwood is rotting in jail and his son hates him. I do have to give tons of credit to Andrea Brooks, because trying to play that triple-agent role (as we found out at the end) couldn’t have been easy. I’ll give the writers credit for saying how President Scarecrow became Olivia’s running mate in the first place, but bringing in the 25th Amendment to get him out of office, while it was at least legally sound and faster than an impeachment trial, was just one last blast of topicality I didn’t need. I realize that this show has had justice, etc. at its core since the very first CBS “Fight Song” promo that said “It’s not a bird…it’s not a plane…it’s not a man,” but spending this whole season on a really bad analogy just really wore me down.

Oh, and Lena finally found out the truth and hates Kara now.

Things I’m really looking forward to: the Supergirl Radio character spotlights on J’onn’s brother and Leviathan (the latter is at the center of the big DC Comics crossover this summer so it may be a moving target), Crisis on Infinite Earths, and more Eve. I wonder…did Eve get her own dark wig for that last scene, or did they make her wear Red Daughter’s?

Take care, please bring back the comics reviews this hiatus, and have a great summer!

  1. Nice song parody, Mark! Sadly, your lyrics are correct in that the mindwipe was…kinda pointless (as I feared that it would be).

I could use less of the topical storylines, too. Morgan was right in that they had to get the 25th Amendment in on their Topical Bingo for the season (it’s funny because it’s true).

Eve was such a stand-out this season, wasn’t she?

We’ll definitely do a spotlight on J’onn’s brother (look forward to how we botch his name). We may look into doing a spotlight on Leviathan (just depends on how many new characters are introduced and what our schedule is like). We’ll also do some Rebirth catchup, but it won’t be until later on in the season. We’ve got some good things coming your way so stay tuned!

Nice Scarecrow and Mrs. King reference. 🤣🤣🤣
