Listener Email: Forcing Brainy to MacGyver

Mark wrote Supergirl Radio an email to share some thoughts about the Supergirl Season Six episode titled “Prom Night!”

WASSSSUUUPPPPPPPPPPP???????
Seriously, I looked it up… the Budweiser campaign that started that ended in 2002, and IIRC everyone was incredibly burnt out on it well before that. So I have two questions: how bad is Brainy’s intel to think that was still a thing in 2009, and why would someone give a job to a writer who was apparently incredibly anxious to go far out of their way to bring that back?

So, beyond that, and the apparent state of disrepair of the Legion cruiser so that it couldn’t travel a dozen years into the past without forcing Brainy to MacGyver a 3D printer out of Super Glue, a few washers, and some transparent aluminum, this episode was actually a lot of fun.  Brainy and Nia actually looked pretty good in their prom “disguises” (I’ll not try to guess what was trending for prom dresses in 2009, but the basic tux always works), and all 4 of the “baby Danvers” actors (young Kara, Alex, Kenny, and Cat, excuse me, “CJ”) were spot on.  I was surprised that they remembered that Kenny had been killed last time and they nonchalantly used Crisis as an excuse to retcon it (something that the actual comics sucked at… even though the heroes remembered the pre-Crisis Multiverse, they never acknowledged it). (Also, OH MY GOD! THEY UNKILLED KENNY!) I loved that Kenny is now Kara’s Lana Lang (who knew Clark’s secret in the comics right after Crisis, until they decided that she was actually a Manhunter replacement).  They remembered that Alex had a hard time for quite a while with what she felt she was forced to give up because of Kara disrupting her Only-hood. They even alluded to Jeremiah! It’s like someone in the writers’ room actually went back and watched the show!
Did you notice in the DEO file on the menagerie-owner, one of his aliases was “ALIEN KING”?  I’m not sure anyone will get that in 5 or 10 years, but I thought it was funny.
Finally, it’s rare that I call out the direction of the show for criticism, but something did bug me in this one.  During the milkshake scene early on, when Kenny left to go up to the counter, Alex referred to him while talking about Kara not wanting to tell him she wanted to leave for National City U, and they did a focus pull from her back to him at the counter. That focus change might be a trope, but it just didn’t work here. At first I thought they had used a bad take or had to blur something on Alex’s hands until I looked again.
